How does the race work?
The race begins with registration 45 minutes before your team’s starting time. When you pick up the team registration packet, bib numbers are pinned on each runner and the vehicle number is placed in the front dashboard of your team vehicle. After cheering runner 1 on at the starting line, the rest of the team hops in the team vehicle and drives to exchange point 1, cheering out the car windows for runner 1 as they drive by. At the exchange point, the team waits and runner 2 gets ready to run. When it is announced by the volunteer at the exchange point that runner 1 is approaching, runner 2 gets in the exchange zone and waits for runner 1 to reach him/her where the slap wristband is passed from runner 1 to runner 2 within the zone. As soon as runner 2 has the slap wristband on, he/she takes off running with plenty of cheering from the teammates. Runner 1 then hops in the team vehicle with the rest of the team and continues to the next exchange point where the whole process is repeated.
What time does the race start?
Starting times are staggered (10-15 teams start every 20 minutes) beginning at 7:00 am on race day. The team captain will be assigned a start time several days before the race and receive this information in an email. The start times will range from 7:00 am to 10:00 am.
What are the team captain’s responsibilities?
The team captain is responsible for making sure all team members are aware of the rules and for relaying important race information to everyone on the team.
When is the captains’ meeting?
When you register 45 minutes before your start time at Red Cliffs Lodge, there will be a short captains’ meeting where race updates and changes will be given.
Where is the team packet pickup?
Red Cliffs Lodge (the starting line) is where the team can register and pick up their packet with bib numbers, shirts, course guides, etc.
Is there traffic control or police assistance?
The starting line is the only place that police will assist you in crossing highway 128. Runner 1 will continue for 1.5 miles where another police will be placed at the La Sal Mountain Loop Road Junction. From this point on, runners must take precautions whenever crossing the road.
How long will the race take?
The length of time it takes to finish the race depends on the average speed of your team. If your team averages a 12-minute mile, you will finish the race in about 9 hours. If your team averages a 7-minute mile, you will finish the race in about 5 hours.
How many miles will I run at one time?
The legs of the race vary in length from 2.3 miles to 6.7 miles.
How many total miles will I run?
Depending on what runner you choose to be, you will run a total mileage between 6.5 miles and 9 miles. Refer to the Course Guide on The Race page for maps and descriptions.
What is the baton?
A slap wristband will be issued in the team registration packet on race day and passed from one runner’s wrist to the next runner’s wrist at the exchange point.
What do I do if there is an emergency?
Contact 911 or the nearest exchange point volunteer. Each vehicle must carry a first aid kit and medical assistance will be at exchange point 8 and will be capable of helping with muscle strains, blisters, and minor heat exhaustion.
Changing/Substituting Questions
Can we change or substitute team members after submitting our registration form?
Yes. If it is before race day, make the change through email (refer to Roster Changes under Registration). If the change is needed on race day, changes can be made at registration for a $25 fee.
Can we change runners in the middle of a leg?
Yes. Refer to Substituting under Rules for complete instructions on changing runners.
Vehicle Questions
How do the team vehicles work?
Each team is allowed one vehicle to carry each runner to the respective exchange points. Vehicles must continue moving and stop only at exchange points due to the narrow road. Vehicles must be cautious of runners and obey all traffic rules and volunteers.
Exchange Point Questions
What is at the exchange points?
There are volunteers, a zoned area where the baton exchange must take place, parking, and port-o-potties at most exchanges.
Are there aid stations or water stations along the course?
There is one aid station providing treatment for minor heat exhaustion, pulled muscles, and blisters at exchange 8, however, there are no water stations. You are responsible for providing your own drinks and snacks during the race. There will be juice and bagels at the starting line and food at the finish line.
Weather Questions
What will the weather be like?
Moab will generally reach the low to mid 90s at this time of year. The Mountain Loop Road, where a large portion of the race is run, is generally in the mid 70s. We recommend jackets for the cooler early morning and lots of water to stay hydrated. You may also want to use squirt bottles to cool your runners off.
Will the race be cancelled if the weather is bad?
No. The race will go on regardless of the weather. If there happens to be lightening, we recommend staying in the car until the danger passes and keeping track of your time there so we can subtract it from your final race time at the finish line.
Finish Line Questions
What is at the finish line?
There are lots of shady trees and grass at the Old City Park where the race will finish. There is a photo area where Action Shots will take your team picture, free food, picnic tables, a Frisbee area, and a duck pond. Awards will also be presented here to the top finishers in each category.
